About Us

Founded in 1966, Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) is an independent non-profit organization that is dedicated to assisting  Cambridge public school students achieve their educational goals.

"Volunteering was fun. I felt it was a nice change of pace to work with kids and be grounded by their sense of humor. . . and a reality check after being stressed out at law school!"

-CSV Elementary Volunteer

CSV develops programs that match caring and competent adults with students of all needs and levels of learning.  CSV employs a professional staff of ten (full and part-time) who oversee these programs and who are also responsible for the placement of more than 900 volunteers annually working in the 12 elementary schools and the high school.

To learn more about our staff, see CSV People.

Our volunteers provide more than 45,000 donated hours of tutoring one-to-one, assisting teachers in the classroom, participating in corporate partner programs (KeyPals/NetPals and Reading Buddies), and helping with special projects.  To learn more about our programs, see CSV Programs.

More than 2500 students in the Cambridge Public School system benefit from CSV's services each year.

Because we receive less than one-half of our operating and in-kind budget from the Cambridge Public Schools, we rely on funding from individuals, foundations and corporations to ensure that our paid staff may continue their valuable work of promoting the academic and personal success of Cambridge school children.

Staff

CSV consists of 9 full and part-time professional staff members with experience in the fields of education, social work, and program development with children and families at-risk. Staff provide oversight, screening, training, recognition and support to sustain the impressive contributions of volunteers. Staff manage the many tutoring and mentoring programs in the city's elementary schools and high school, including special corporate as well as intergenerational literacy and math programs.

One of CSV's vital roles is to ensure that each volunteer activity has a sound educational basis. Volunteers receive orientation, training, curriculum information and support from CSV staff. Staff also evaluate each program to help them stay on track.
