Calling All New Volunteers

Want to make a real difference in the life of a Cambridge student?  Each year, Cambridge School Volunteers places hundreds of volunteers as tutors and mentors in the Cambridge Schools, grades K-12. In classrooms, Learning Centers, and before- and after-school programs throughout the city, each CSV volunteer dedicates at least 1 or 2 hours a week, on a week day, supporting the academic and personal success of Cambridge children. CSV has volunteer opportunities in elementary, middle school, and the high school:

  • In the twelve local elementary schools, we need volunteers to work on literacy, math, and reading with students;
  • In the Cambridge upper schools (grades 6, 7, and 8), we need volunteers to help students tackle their homework in school-based Learning Centers;
  • and in the high school, we need volunteer tutors to meet with students both before and after school in our Tutoring Center and to mentor seniors applying for college in CSV’s College and Career Mentor Program.
  • At every grade level, JK-12th, we also place classroom volunteers at the request of the teacher.

The first step to joining as a new volunteer is to attend a Volunteer Orientation. At the orientation, you will have the chance to ask questions, learn about the various volunteering opportunities and choose the program and time that works for you. Contact Us if you have questions and want to learn more.

Volunteers are asked to commit one or two hours per week for at least one semester.

Our programs serve children during the school day as well as before and after school. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

No tutoring or teaching experience is necessary. CSV provides training to all volunteers as well as ongoing optional workshops to enhance your work with students.

We require two references – one professional and one personal:

K-8 Reference Form

High School Reference Form

All volunteers are required to fill out a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) form for criminal background checks. This form must have an original signature. For most programs, you will complete the form in person with a CSV staff person.

Our diverse and talented volunteers range in age from older teens to older adults and include working professionals, retirees, undergraduates and graduate students, parents, high school students volunteering as peer tutors, and others from Cambridge and surrounding communities. At CSV, we work hard to create a great match between each of our volunteers and the students they are helping, ensuring a win-win for everyone. We hope you will consider joining us at Cambridge School Volunteers!

We provide training and support for volunteers in these roles. No matter what your interest, location, or schedule during the school week, at CSV, we work hard to create winning opportunities for every volunteer and a great match between “your” student and you! Please note that all of our opportunities are before, during, or after school; we do not have any evening or weekend opportunities.

You can always just call our office at 617 349-6794. We look forward to speaking with and meeting you!
