Running for ReadersWhat is the time commitment?
Volunteers give one or two hours per week, for at least one semester. Many volunteers choose to work more hours.

When are volunteers needed?
All opportunities occur before, during or after the school day (between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, during the school year). (In summer 2018 we are offering one pilot volunteer opportunity)

Where are volunteers needed?
Tutors and mentors are needed in every school, from elementary through high school. Click here for a map of all schools in the Cambridge Public School District.

Who are the students?
Our public schools have a very diverse student body. Students served by CSV have requested help or have been referred by their teacher.

Can I help if I’ve never worked in a school?
Yes! You do not have to have prior experience as a tutor or teacher. We will work to match your talents with a need in the schools.

What about training?
Training begins as soon as you attend one of the informational orientation sessions. Ongoing support continues via training events throughout the year. Some special projects have monthly trainings as well.

How do I get started?
Visit the How to Get Started page to sign up for an orientation.

Where do the CSV orientations take place?
Elementary/middle and high school orientations take place at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS). Click here for a map & directions.

Do I need references?
Yes, you will need two references—one professional and one personal. You should have known the person providing your reference for at least one year. Neither can be a relative.
