Intrepid cyclist Susan Reynolds joined CSV last year to direct our Reading Buddies Program and this fall takes on the role of KeyPals director as well. Both programs leverage the volunteerism of our corporate partner employees and generosity of the employers themselves.
Reynolds is no stranger to the joys and triumphs of the beginning reader, having taught for 25 years in pre-K as well as Grade 1 classrooms. Her “passion for literacy” dovetails with the goals of that program, to instill a love of books to support the skill of reading and unlock, as it does, success in school and beyond. Her favorite children’s authors include Oliver Jeffers, Peter Reynolds, and Amy Krause Rosenthal.
KeyPals, similarly, pairs adult volunteers and students one-to-one. This small program of fifth-graders catches kids in the critical moment before middle school, helping them develop their writing and technology skills with the attention of a caring adult.
Susan is herself a longtime volunteer in school and church settings. “Currently,” she says, “I volunteer weekly at a program that provides lunch, rest, resources and community to area residents who are living on the margins.”
Susan’s job at Cambridge School Volunteers includes coordinating with teachers whose students are matched with Reading Buddies and KeyPals; acting as liaison to corporate partners Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, Sanofi (Reading Buddies), Neon Therapeutics, a corps of community Reading Buddies, and volunteer KeyPals who work for MIT, IBM, and Draper Laboratory.
