What is Cambridge School Volunteers
(CSV)?
CSV is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1966 to recruit, screen,
train and support volunteers in the Cambridge Public Schools. Last
year, more than 900 volunteers provided tutoring, mentoring, enrichment
and academic support to students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School
and at the 12 elementary schools throughout the city.
Why give?
Teachers rely on CSV volunteers to provide one-on-one attention
to a student who is struggling.
Schools rely on CSV volunteers to provide enrichment and fun learning
projects such as Science Olympiad.
Corporate partners rely on CSV to design educational volunteer models
that work.
How will my money be used?
CSV programs include the CRLS high school Tutoring Center and drop-in
math help, elementary school tutors and classroom assistants, elementary
after-school Learning Centers, an Intergenerational Math Program,
an Intergenerational Literacy Program, Science Olympiad coaching,
MCAS preparation, AVID mentoring, school library support and placements tailored
for individual volunteers or small groups. CSV also runs the NetPals
and KeyPals programs for middle school students and the Reading
Buddies program for beginning readers.
Who volunteers?
The volunteers come from many walks of life: retirees, students,
parents, and people who live and work in Cambridge.
How much of my contribution goes
to helping kids?
Because CSV relies on a work force of almost 1,000 volunteers, your
contribution goes farther. For every $1 donated to CSV, we leverage
$9 in donated volunteer services. Last year, CSV volunteers donated
more than 53,000 hours of their time.
Why does an agency that uses volunteers
need money?
CSV’s professional staff provides oversight, screening, safety,
training, recognition and support to sustain the impressive contributions
of volunteers. One of CSV’s vital roles is to ensure that
each volunteer activity has a sound educational basis rather than
a “feel good” premise. Volunteers receive orientation,
training, curriculum information and support from CSV staff, and
we evaluate each program to help us stay on track.
