CSV COLLEGE READY: PLANNING, MENTORING & ESSAY WRITING KICK-OFF TRAINING
RSVP at 617-349-6794 or sign up online: http://collegereadycrls.eventbrite.com/
The College Ready Kick-Off training is for both new and experienced CSV College mentors. CSV is gearing up to support the new crop of CRLS juniors and seniors with the College application process.
Your guidance and support makes a powerful difference in helping seniors to navigate an overwhelming process, meet deadlines, attain scholarships, have a positive and meaningful experience, connect with a caring adult who has been through the process, improve their writing skills, and explore college and career goals.
This session will be delivered by CRLS guidance department, George Finn and Janani Nathan and English teacher, Amanda E. Hughes. **See Trainer Bios below. Comprehensive instruction will cover the nuts and bolts of senior year, training in the Naviance College application software, application requirements and deadlines, role of guidance and mentors, how you can help develop personal life stories into strong college essays and more. This is also a time to meet the College Ready mentor team and ask important questions.
Following the October 8 College Kick-Off Workshop, the program will hit the ground running to begin serving seniors on Wednesday, 10/15, 2:30-5:O0pm in the CRLS Career and College Resource Center (CCRC) Room 1501. Subsequent meetings take place every Wednesday. Wednesdays sessions are the core meeting group with pizza and snacks provided for students. However, alternate meeting days can be arranged between you and your individual students in the CRLS library upon being matched on a Wednesday.
College Ready Trainers
Lead Trainer George Finn, Psy.D. CRLS Guidance Counselor, 11 years at CRLS, holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, 7 years prior experience as a therapist. George has a caseload of 202 students with 50 seniors.
Janani Nathan majored in Biology at Lafayette College for her undergraduate education and then worked in a non-profit organization helping homeless students transition back into public schools. She back to school to pursue a Masters degree in Behavioral Disorders at Columbia – Teachers College and worked in the NYC school system for three years prior to starting at CRLS in 2001 as an inclusion specialist for one year. She then transitioned into the science department where she taught Physics and Biology for five years. At that time she went back to school for a Masters degree in School Guidance and has worked as counselor for the past six years at CRLS. Janani is proud to be part of the CRLS community!
Amanda Hughes has taught English 11 HN and CP (HN Option) at CRLS since 2010. Because the college essay is a required benchmark assessment for junior English, Ms. Hughes and the eleventh grade team have developed a wealth of curriculum relating to its development and refinement. She has been honored to oversee the essays of about a third of each year’s graduating class. Ms. Hughes is a graduate of Boston University ( BFA), Lesley University (M.Ed) and (in November ’14) Harvard University (ALM)
